"Gear up. It’s time."

"You’re gonna wear that?"

"No. If you got to fight a war, you got to wear a uniform."

Has anyone talked about Steve’s original uniform yet? Because I really think we should, because it is ripe with implications.

On the bridge, Steve falls into a flashback about Bucky and is pulled back by Sam who reminds him that Bucky is currently brainwashed, amnesiac and homocidial. But no, Steve is certain that Bucky will remember him. And not even seconds after declaring this, he tells Sam to gear up.

Now, I realize there are plenty of meta reasons for Steve donning his old uniform: a call-back to the first movie, it fits with the whole ‘new vs. old’ theme, it creates a great visual clash between Old Steve and New Bucky on the helicarrier, etc. There are also plenty of in-universe reasons too: Steve does need some kind of armour if he’s going to fight the Winter Soldier, his previous one might have been damaged and/or confiscated by SHIELD, he knew the one in the museum would fit him, etc.

I just can’t quite buy all of that. First of all, what if the museum piece is a replica? There’s no guarantee it would still fit Steve’s dorito body-shape if that was the case. Or, if it was the original, hurrah for 70-year-old threads! I can’t imagine that would fit very well either, what with the years taking its toll. It has to be creaky in some places.

But fine, let’s say that Howard Stark is a fashion genius as well and the suit is still as perfect as the day it was made. Why would Steve bother to break into a museum? (Personally, I’d say ‘stripping your mannequin and placing the shield strategically for shits and giggles’ is an excellent reason, but I am neither mature nor a superhero.)

Steve is a pragmatist; it’s one of his defining traits. His signature is his shield and his wits. In TFA, when he decided to go and save Bucky and the other POWs, he simply pulled on a pair of trousers, a leather jacket, a helmet and a pair of proper boots on top of his chorus girl outfit and was off. Steve doesn’t need his suit, although it of course makes fighting easier.

No, I think the main motivation behind Steve picking up his old suit was the one he explicitly gave us - he will remember me.

Steve knew he’d meet Bucky in this battle, and prepared himself for it. He put on the old Captain America suit - you’re keeping the outfit, right? - to give Bucky something visually familiar, since he can’t briefly turn back into Sickly Steve, whom Bucky has known all his life. So the next best thing will have to do.

Hey, everybody! Let’s hear it for Captain America!
